Disabling Ink Level Detection on HP DesignJet Printers

This brief article explains how to disable ink level detection in order to use refilled cartridges in your HP DesignJet large format printer.

Refilling your cartridges will not affect the ink level in memory on the cartridge chip (and which is displayed on the printer). If your cartridge was not yet empty, it'll simply keep printing until the level reaches zero, at which point you will get an "Empty Cartridge" error message. If your cartridge had already reached a zero level, then it will immediately display the "Empty Cartridge" error message.

Once you get an "Empty Cartridge" error, in order to continue using the refilled cartridge, you will need to disable ink level monitoring. See the procedure below for your particular printer:

Disabling Ink Level Detection on the HP DesignJet T7100, T7200:

  1. Install the refilled cartridge into the printer.
  2. An empty cartridge error message will appear, and the cartridge removal process will start automatically. Interrupt this process by pressing the Cancel button.
  3. Select the Ink Drop icon. Highlight Replace Cartridges but do not actually select it.
  4. Instead, press and hold the Cancel and Up buttons for at least two seconds.
  5. Several warnings will be displayed. Follow the onscreen instructions to accept each warning.
  6. IMPORTANT: Once ink level detection has been disabled, the cartridge will provide no warning of when it's about to truly run empty! You will need to periodically remove and check/weigh the cartridge and make sure to top it up with ink well in advance of it truly running empty!
